Monumenta Germaniae Historica - Electronic Versiondigitalen
The editions of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH), which are predominantly held as a non-lending collection by libraries, will now be made accessible from every PC workstation all over the world. For this purpose, a cooperation project supported by the German Research Foundation was launched by the MGH and the Digitisation Centre of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (start of the project: 1 July 2004). It is intended to continue the project also after the cessation of the financial support by the German Research Foundation. Out of consideration of the book distribution, the topical editions of the respectively preceding five years will remain available in print only, and will then be digitised one after another (a "moving wall" of five years).
The first milestone of the project was scheduled for the spring of 2005 and comprised the publication on the Web of all edition volumes of the MGH in an image form. Until 2010 three further project stages will take place, in which the full texts of the editions, the prefaces, the annotations and the registers will be digitised.
- The first project stage (2004 to 2006) comprised the full texts of the series Diplomata, Epistolae and Antiquitates,
- the second stage (2006 to 2008) comprises the folio Scriptores and the Leges,
- the third stage (2008 to 2010) the Antiquitates and all further Scriptores series.
