7,589 digitised incunabulae available online

news

With more than 20,000 copies of 9,756 editions, the collection of incunabula of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is not only Germany's largest collection, but, taking the number of copies as a measure, it is the most extensive collection of any library worldwide. From 2008 to 2013 one copy of every edition of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek was scanned and made available online within the framework of a digitization project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Currently, 7,589 titles are available online.

To avoid creating digital duplicates, editions were excluded that had already been digitised by other libraries. In addition, some copies could not be scanned for reasons of conservation. In the course of the past five years, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has thus digitised a quarter of all prints of the 15th century (the complete number of incunabula editions worldwide amounts to roughly 30.000). Among the best-known works there are the Gutenberg bible and Hartmann Schedel's illustrated personal copy of his world chronicle. The works have been catalogued in the OPACplus and in a special online catalogue for incunabula, BSB-Ink online.
