VD 16 Digital - Catalog of Printed Works of the 16th Century Published in German Speaking Countries of the Bavarian State Library

The VD 16 is a retrospective national bibliography and lists all known printed works published in the German-speaking area in the period of 1501-1600. Single-sheet prints, maps, and musica practica, however, are not included. The bibliographic cataloguing of printed works from the 16th century was supported by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG) from 1969 to 1999 and has since been continued with funds from the Bavarian State Library's own budget. From 2006 to 2016, the library’s holdings bearing relevance for the VD 16 were digitized by the Munich DigitiZation Center (MDZ) in a way being appropriate for the specific object with at least one copy per issue. These digitized copies are listed both in the Union and local catalogue as well as in the VD 16 and can thus be reused. The digital master files have been archived for the long-term. At the end of the project, more than 29,000 titles had been made available in digital form with funding from the DFG. In accordance with the DFG action line 'Digitization of prints referenced in national catalogues - VD 16/VD 17', the VD 16 also provides the basis for numerous other coordinated digitization projects. The copies digitized by the Bavarian State Library in the public-private partnership with Google, which are part of the BSB project, are also indexed here on a regular basis.
